Of the estimated 2 million species of fungi on Earth, about 600 can cause disease. The Global Action Fund for Fungal Infections (GAFFI) estimates that over 300 million people of all ages suffer from serious fungal diseases every year, resulting in over 1 350 000 deaths globally.
