Short answer
Usually not. Containment barriers and negative air pressure isolate the work area from the rest of the home, so the remaining living space stays usable.
The exceptions are occupants with diagnosed mold sensitivity, asthma or immune compromise; infants; projects that involve the central HVAC system; and jobs where the only bathroom or kitchen is inside containment.

Why it matters in San Diego
Whether you can stay is partly a floor-plan question. A Carlsbad house with another bathroom presents different choices from a Coronado condo where the only bathroom opens into the work area. A sealed work zone helps isolate removal, but it does not make an unavailable kitchen or blocked hallway usable. We look at how you would actually live around the project.
In a Solana Beach condo, access through shared spaces also needs planning. HOA arrangements, crew entry and the route for removing bagged material should be discussed before work. You should not have to improvise a path through containment to get out of your home.

How we handle it
We start by identifying the work area and the rooms you would still need. Tell us about bathrooms, cooking space, sleeping areas, pets and your normal route to the front door. The goal is a practical plan, not simply an answer of yes or no. We explain where barriers and equipment would go before you decide whether staying is workable.
Containment separates the removal area. Negative air supports inward airflow, and HEPA filtration is part of the work controls. Those controls are not an invitation to cross the barrier. We discuss which doors and routes are for the crew and which remain available to you. Household members and pets need to stay outside the work zone.
We also discuss ventilation and any shared air paths that affect the plan. Do not change equipment settings, open barriers or move protective sheeting to make the space more convenient. If the arrangement stops working for your household, tell us. Changing the access plan deliberately is better than quietly defeating the controls while removal is underway.
Before the area returns to normal use, we complete the removal, HEPA cleaning and clearance steps in scope. Ask what remains restricted and when that restriction changes. We explain the building-work boundaries. We do not certify that staying is medically appropriate for a particular person, and we do not tell a tenant or owner what the law requires.
What it costs and what to expect
Most mold removal jobs run $1,300–$3,500. Bigger losses can run higher, and we provide a written estimate first. That is the removal budget, not a quote for accommodation or a promise that you will not need another place to stay. Discuss access before making those arrangements.
Our inspection is free for homeowners and property managers and includes photos, a written report and a free removal estimate. It does not include lab results. If testing is wanted, swab and/or air samples cost $195 for 2 or $295 for 3, plus $75 each additional sample, with laboratory analysis and a report. Testing does not replace an individual medical discussion about occupancy.
